SCSPE President’s Report

SCSPE President
George McCall, PE

Spring is here and my year as president is approaching an end, but South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers is working hard to promote our profession.

This year, SCSPE has hosted a newly licensed engineering ceremony, fed pizza to those taking the PE exam, held a very popular Fall Symposium in Greenville and Charleston, hosted a very successful Legislative Reception along with ACEC-SC, AIA-SC, ASCE/SC Section, and Carolinas AGC and held the annual ACEC-SC/SCSPE Winter Meeting.

In addition to these great programs, SCSPE has been working hard trying to better our profession.  Past President Marguerite McClam, PE, SCSPE Member Trina Baldwin, PE, Account Executive Adam B. Jones, and I met with U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan last month to discuss emergency assistance and asked him what SCSPE could do for him and the state of South Carolina.

SCSPE has also led the charge joining Executive Director Joe S. Jones and Account Executive Adam B. Jones, both registered lobbyist for SCSPE, at the State House.  Engineers go to the State House with the Jones and speak to their House member and Senator about the Engineering Practice Act (S.410) and ask for their help to get it passed.  We also talk to other House Members and/or Senators who are on the Labor Commerce and Industry committee where the bill is being reviewed.  So far, SCSPE Members Ismail Ozbek, Carlos Gittens, and I have attended.

SCSPE still has great things on the horizon for this year and we hope you plan on participating.   Still to come this year with SCSPE - State MathCounts this weekend at Meadow Glenn Middle school in Lexington, SC, the SCSPE Planning Retreat on April 10, 2015 at the SC Fire Academy, the SCSPE Disaster Preparedness on April 29, 2015 in Columbia SC at Saluda Shoals and we finish the year at the SC Engineering Conference & Trade Show at the Hilton Myrtle Beach in Myrtle Beach SC.

Chapters do not let the deadline of March 31, 2015 for Engineer of the Year and Young Engineer of the Year nominations sneak up on you.  Each chapter has exceptional engineers, and they deserve to be recognized.
